Heading Home

The girls have been anxious to see my stunt kite fly so we went to Zuanich Point Park to try to catch a little breeze off the bay. We got just enough breeze to get aloft for a few minutes and satisfy the girls' curiosity. With the winds down as well as the kites, this kayaker took the opportunity to sneak across the field.

Chuckanut Paragliders

This was one of the lost photos that I can't believe I forgot to post before.  These paragliders were captured two months ago sailing down from Blanchard Mountain into the Skagit Valley.  They seemed to coast up in the winds near the top of the mountain for a very long time and finally headed down where I was able to snap this picture.

Weekend Adventure

My family came together and we enjoyed a getaway to Remlinger Farms in Carnation, Washington.  My eldest daughter rode her very first roller coaster with her cousins, aunts, uncle and grandpa.

Skywatch Friday: Stars

Last weekend we marched in the Junior Ski to Sea parade with our daughter's preschool.  Each kid chooses a color and they and their families dress head to toe in that color and march with other families in the same color. We were in the blue group as well as the mom carrying this star pole.

Growing Cobwebs

Sadly, there are literally spiders growing on my camp trailer.  If this isn't a sign that it's time to get out camping, I don't know what is!

Get Well Soon

My family and I have been sick these last few days, so I think a nice get well soon flower is in order for today.  I hope we kick this crud so we can get back out into the world.

Spring View

A view from the top of Maritime Heritage Park through the spring foliage of what remains on the Georgia Pacific site.  Most of it has been torn down lately.  This post was captured about a week before this building came down.

Iconic Northwest Mural

This beautiful mural is located on Prospect street right next to the Whatcom Museum.   It was painted by East Los Streetscapers, a collaborative studio for public art that designs "culturally relevant and architecturally compatible" street art.   I've gone by several times hoping to capture a photo with no cars parked, but alas I gave up.

Bellingham Squadron

The local branch of the civil air patrol practices formation flights around the Cordata area.  There was a fifth plane that I could never seem to get in frame with the others.

Skywatch Friday: Oeser Stack

This chimney is what led me to the site of yesterday's post.  I've seen the stack many times from the distance but never took the time to try to get closer. The new road I mentioned yesterday is part of a new park and trail system on Little Squalicum creek just below the Oeser plant.  This park was created as part of the cleanup plan to mitigate years of soil contamination from Oeser's wood treating operations. The Oeser facility was listed as an EPA Superfund site before it was cleaned up as well.

Log Train

Yesterday I explored a new section of road that was completed last year and saw this train car load of  logs on a siding near a lumber yard full of exceptionally clean logs.  They were all debarked, straight and perfectly tapered.  After a little digging this morning I learned that the Oeser Company makes wood utility poles for the power industry.

Barkley

Barkley Village could just be labeled as another strip mall, but it feels like more then that. Its a nicely designed neighborhood group of stores and restaurants that are very popular.

Hummingbird

This beautiful creature visits my house several times a day and we are usually alerted to his arrival by that magical hum that gives them their name.  For such a small animal I am always amazed at how loud that hum actually is.

It's B'ham....

...but this could really be a scene anywhere.  A little bit of sunshine, a good book, and some yummy coffee make for a very relaxing afternoon.
Happy Mother's Day!

Skywatch Friday: Sue Boynton Poetry Contest Reading

The winners of the 2012 Sue Boynton Poetry Contest were invited to the Alaska Ferry Terminal building to read their poems.  Sharp eyes might recognize this contestant as Bellingham Daily Photo's very own Lizziviggi.
Congratulations!

Lizzi's winning poem:

My Mother's Afterlife
She prepares for our arrival--
brushes pine needles off the table,
unfurls the checkered cloth
with a snap
of her wrist.
Mourning doves hush
as she stacks clacking
kindling next to the firepit
dead with ashes.
When she ceases
they cry to each other
across the shrouding mist.
She sets out canvas
camping chairs and rests
in the one nearest the pond.
She has years to wait.

A nymph lumbers from under
the verdant surface
onto a cow lily and dances
into its dragonfly shape.
New wings unfurled, it sees her
with many eyes.
It clings to the old body, its pale
new one jewelling blue-green.

Frolic

What can I say?  Sunny May days lead to parks, kites and fun.  Some may remember a post from last May that where lizzi captured my baby daughter in a red wagon, see it here.  What a difference a year can make.

Super Moon

The moon blasts out from behind a tall tree on the horizon.  The moon last night really was very big, bright and worth hanging outside late to see.

Skywatch Friday: Whoo Wants to Fly a Kite?

I dug this one out of the archives from last year, but just as I was getting ready to post I noticed there was already a Bellingham Daily Photo watermark on the photo, and after a little digging found Lizzi already posted this picture last year. However, I need to leave for work in about five minutes so its going up anyway!

Orange Dream

Well this orange Volkswagen station wagon was some one's dream once upon a time.  Now it looks happy to be retired amongst the long green grass.
