Eagle Eyes

As we were playing down at the beach this weekend and throwing rocks into the lake, I noticed we had someone watching us.  This beautiful eagle was perched high at the top of a nearby tree and surveyed the lake for his next meal.  Even from high up, he was magnifying.

The Eagles have Landed...

...at Bennett Woodland Farms. The locals say these trees are sometimes full of eagles, but only a few hearty birds were out today. Here's a closer look:

Doting Parent

This stately mother/father is always somewhere nearby her/his nest at the edge of Whatcom Falls Park. This was taken across the street at Bloedel Donovan Park-- still within an eagle-eyed view of her/his babies.

The Eagles Rock

A pair of bald eagles claimed this rock as their own at Larrabee State Park. Not surprisingly, none of the seagulls were willing to question the eagles' claim.

It's thanks to MaryBeth of Stanwood DP that I got this shot of a bald eagle surveying his territory. This post of hers prompted a conversation between us that resulted in her invitation to show me where the good eagle spots are. Voila! Thanks again, MaryBeth!

Although he's in a tree, whenever I see a bald eagle I'm reminded of the poem "The Eagle" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson:

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.

Nesting Instinct

Today, a bald eagle in honor of our veterans. Our national bird, the bald eagle is majestic and powerful, loving and faithful.

A bald eagle carries a stick to the big Douglas Fir, where he or she is building an aerie high in the branches for their offspring. It's hard to say whether this is Mommy or Daddy, as both sexes share responsibilities for nest building, egg-sitting, and even caring for the young.

This photo was actually not taken in Bellingham, it was taken on Vashon Island, where I spent the weekend at Betty Macdonald's Farm.
