Skywatch Friday: An Evening Stroll

A few hearty Bellinghamsters stroll down the boardwalk to take in the setting sun.  As sunset approaches on warmer nights, there is often a string of photographers along the boardwalk's edge waiting for the perfect shot.

Sailing in the Snow

Sunday was a mix of sun, wind and snow.  My family happened upon Boulevard Park as the snow was really coming down and my little ones had fun chasing snowflakes.  As we were leaving the park we spotted this boat out for a snowy sail.  Once we got about a half mile inland, the snow was gone and the skies were clear and sunny.

Guerilla Art

"Grace" appeared on Halloween night on a pile of industrial waste off of the Taylor Street Dock near Boulevard Park.  The artist has chosen to remain anonymous, though he shared his story with Cascadia Weekly.  This sculpture of a dancer in a standing bow position was displayed with no permits or city approval.  "Grace" has remained on display for over a month and doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.  I surely hope the city or whomever owns the land lets it stay.

Rope-Walking at Taylor Dock

This enterprising young man and his friends strung a rope across a section of Taylor Dock and worked on their balancing act over the water last week. No one made it across while I was watching, but I think plunging into the bay was all part of the fun anyway.

Walk-Up Window

This being the Pacific Northwest, you can find a coffee shop just about anywhere-- even in the middle of a park. There are lots of Woods Coffee locations in Whatcom County. This one is in Boulevard Park, and I find myself frequenting it no matter the season. In summer it's a great place to stop after a jog, get a cool drink, and sit on the patio with the breeze and the view of the islands. In the winter the girls play on the playground for about five minutes before they say "I'm coooooold" and then we go inside Woods for some hot chocolate by the fireplace.

Long Line of Bubble-Blowers

Last Saturday, August 14, Bellingham's "Improv Playworks" put together Bellingham's very first flash mob. If you don't know what a flash mob is, check out these fine examples on Youtube. Basically, a big group of people storm someplace, do something silly for a few minutes, and disperse again without explanation. If it sounds ridiculous, that's the point! It spreads smiles and laughter, and puts fun into an otherwise ordinary day. For our first flash mob, we stuck with something simple: blowing bubbles. We had about 60-70 people participate, and we snaked through the hundreds of people who were at Boulevard Park waiting for the outdoor concert to begin. It was awesome to see the puzzlement on peoples' faces turn to smiles and pointing fingers. We collected an entourage of children along the way, dancing in the bubbles. It was great fun, and you can see the video on Youtube here (although I noticed it's been misdated-- it was the 14th. The 21st hasn't happened yet!)

Skywatch Friday: Gold Coast

I went to Boulevard Park last night to give the new camera a try. The sun was'just setting as I got there, but I had time to play around with it a little. We're heading out camping this weekend so we'll give it a proper breaking in!

Skywatch Friday: Boardwalk

There was a festive energy on the boardwalk last night as Bellinghamsters got out and enjoyed one of the first spring-like evenings of the year.

The Boardwalk at Boulevard

The old boardwalk at Boulevard Park connects the park to a small point farther south on the bay. A new portion of the boardwalk was completed several years ago to continue the boardwalk south to Fairhaven. Plans are in development to extend the boardwalk from Boulevard Park north to the site of the now defunct Georgia Pacific plant in downtown Bellingham.

Bicycle with a View

I took this at Boulevard Park back in July, but it might as well have been yesterday-- we have been enjoying a warm indian summer, and the nice weather is supposed to last through the week. We 'hamsters like to get out and soak up the sun while we can.

Boulevard Boardwalk

One more shot from Boulevard Park. This boardwalk connects to the South Bay trail, so you can walk or bike from downtown Bellingham to Fairhaven.

Walk-Up Window

I love the Woods Coffee in the middle of Boulevard Park. We Hamsters want our coffee easily accessible at all times! All activities are better with an espresso, be it strolling on the boardwalk, watching the sunset, or catching a frisbee.
