Officer's Home

At Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend, sits a row of beautifully stated Officer's homes.  The state rents these homes out to vacationers.  Our group of friends was lucky enough to get to stay in this home.  It still maintains many of its original architecture details and beauty.  This home was once home to Col. Clarence Deems and his family.  I should have looked into the Colonel's history while we were at the Fort, because internet searches only have turned up information on his sought after retirement in 1908, sighting his fondness for his dog.

Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Yesterday, we showed you someone geared up to explore the tunnels and narrows passages of the Battery Kinizie.  Today, this shot gives you a taste of a wide passage with plenty of light.  As you traveled further back into the battery things got narrower, darker, and spookier.

Weekend Reflections: The Explorer

A dark series of passages and storage rooms form Battery Kinzie at Fort Worden State Park.  There are no lights to guide the way so flashlights and a little courage are necessary. This guy was getting prepared to lead his two young children into the depths of the battery.

Skywatch Friday: Deception Pass

We're Back!

Since all contributing members to Bellingham Daily Photo were relaxing on the Olympic peninsula at Ford Worden State Park this week, we've been a little lax about our posts.  We rented one of the officer's houses at the park and spent four days kicking back with family and friends enjoying good company, good food and great times.

We stopped at Deception Pass State Park on the way back for a little lunch and beach time just as the fog was lifting off the water.

A construction barge on the water of Lake Whatcom slowly moves towards its destination.  Anyone need a new dock?

Sunnyland Stomp 2012

Each year our neighborhood holds the Sunnyland Stomp, an art walk where local artists display their talents. This house, which featured jewelry, ceramics, and home-made pies, also had a giant bubble station set up - a hit with all ages.

Hazard!

While walking around the Sunnyland Stomp, the girls spotted a traffic cone and couldn't resist a quick pose.

Ice Cream

One of the nice things about our warm weather lately has been finding ways to cool down.  No one can resist a trip to get some ice cream.  The bright flavors at Lafeens Donut Shop called to be sampled.

Rock Camp

My niece participated in a week long day camp for girls to form a rock band, learn instruments, and write a song or two.  The week ended with a showcase of the girls' work.  A great little concert at a local music bar.

They rocked!!

Campfire

A wonderful and eventful evening spent down at the lake around a campfire.  A thunder storm had rolled through the area, so once it passed us by we built our fire and enjoyed watched the lightening across the lake.

Yellow Sea

On our return trip from a family reunion in Rhinelender Wisconsin, our route took us by the St Croix River near Minneapolis. When we got out of the car at an overlook the temperature was in the high nineties and HUMID. Despite the temperature, this patch of black eyed susans was looking quite perky. We Washingtonians were the wilted ones!

Cat Nap

Lizzi spotted these sleeping kittens that were up for adoption at the farmer's market. I'm sure it was hard to say no, but the last thing we need is more cats.

Fish Art

To close out my end of the week, a last La Conner picture. This fish was one of three set up as an art fixture on a public dock.

La Conner

About a half hour south of Bellingham, the little town of La Conner sits on the Swinomish Channel.  We enjoyed some dinner on La Conner Seafood's back deck and watched the boats come in from the Sound for the evening.

Paddling

Three teenagers paddle board on Lake Whatcom.  It looks like fun, I wish I had one too.

Locust Beach

Pilings peak out of the water at Locust Beach.

I love living in a city where you can discover new beaches even after living there for 25 years. I first heard of Locust Beach a couple of months back when the newspaper ran an article that the family who owns the beach is in talks with the city to turn it into a park. The family allows public access to the beach, but as it's popularity has increased to the point that additional services are needed they have agreed to sell the property to the city.

Skywatch Friday: Rock around the Dock

My youngest daughter started picking rocks up from the lake bed and lining the dock. Others joined in and the border was soon complete.

Nation's Holiday

We celebrated our nation's day of independence with sandwiches and swimming at the lake and once darkness came and fabulous fireworks show put on by all our neighbors surrounding the lake.  I quickly realized that I still have a lot to learn about fireworks photography, so I set down my camera and just enjoyed the night.  I hope you all had a fun and safe 4th.

Happy Birthday!

Happy Independence Day to all our fellow Americans (and anybody else who would like to join the celebration) from Bellingham Daily Photo.

Thank you to the men and women who have given so much to gain our independence and ensure our freedom.

Enjoy the fireworks and be safe!
