Metal Carved into Mountians

This multi layer metal engraved sculpture is part of the artwork on Bellingham Technical College's campus.  I was drawn to this because of it's many layers used to create Mount Baker, the foothills and the forest valley.

Bird's-Eye View of Bellingham

Although it was taken through a scratched and dirty airplane window, I thought this aerial view of Bellingham at daybreak was pretty enough to post. This picture was taken on Friday, when I left behind the gray skies and intermittent snow of Bellingham for blue skies and palm trees in Palm Springs, California. I shopped, ate great food, hiked the hills, and laughed with my companions, all under the glorious California sun. I enjoyed my little getaway... but there's no place like home!

Artists Point

It's been a full year since we've been up to Mount Baker. To remedy that situation we're planning on taking a day hike on one of Mount Baker's many trails tomorrow. This shot was from last years' trip to Artists Point.

Skywatch Friday: Baker Backed by Blue

I'm certainly not going to complain about finally getting some blue skies! Still, cloudless blue skies aren't very photographable. Here's a mountain in front of it, which makes it a little more interesting.

Field of Snow...

...Geese, that is! A huge flock of them landed obligingly in a field with a nice view of Mount Baker in the distance.

MB from Stanwood DP showed me around her neck of the woods yesterday. We were actually looking for bald eagles, but this was my favorite shot of the day.

Thanks for the tour, MB!

White Mountain

Mount Baker, our local glacier-covered volcano. Part of the North Cascades Mountain Range, it rises 10,778 feet above sea level. According to the U.S. Forest Service, it is the second most active volcano in the Cascade Range. The first is Mount St. Helens. Mount Baker holds the world record for the most snowfall in one season-- 1140 inches (2895.6 cm) in 1999.

Old Town and Mount Baker

This another Port Townsend shot taken from the ferry as it pulls away from the dock. The Water Street Hotel where I stayed is the red brick building to the left of Mount Baker. It was built in 1889 by a local pharmacist but fell into disrepair. The building was restored and currently houses a hotel, brewery and art gallery.

The hotel has an old world feel with 10-12 foot ceilings, a central atrium that rises from the second story to the third, and shared bathrooms for several of the rooms. On the street side of the building with nearly floor to ceiling windows, my room offered an excellent vantage point for watching the comings and goings of Water Street.

Sunset at Artists Point

Mount Baker blushes pink at the setting of the sun.

Well, we were lucky to get up there when we did-- snow has already closed off the road to Artists Point. Now we'll have to wait for next year to explore the other trails!

Mount Shuksan Reflection

This is Mount Shuksan as seen from Artists Point, up near Mount Baker. We haven't gone up there in so long, which is a travesty since it's so close and so beautiful! So we drove up yesterday afternoon and wondered why we waited so long, and made lots of promises that we'll come up and get some good hikes in before the first big snowfall. It was so warm yesterday we were in t-shirts until 7:00 up there, so the first snow seems a long way off.

Pile 'O Bikes

My sister Melanie snapped this shot of cyclists preparing for the annual Mount Baker Hill Climb in front of the Glacier Ski Shop. Cyclists start at the tiny town of Glacier and ride up to Artist's Point, which is the highest point you can reach on Mount Baker by bike or car. The cyclists climb 4300' in 24.5 miles. The Hill Climb replaces what used to be the DUMB ride-- Down and Up Mount Baker. I guess the acronym was too accurate!

Skywatch Friday: Cloud Cover

There's supposed to be a mountain there. Our lovely Mount Baker was being shy last week during the stormy weather. Pretty clouds, though, anyway!

See other blogs watching the sky.

Lummi Island Ferry

This is a view of the lovely Mount Baker from Lummi Island. You can take the ferry for $2 on a summer day and experience the laid-back island life for awhile. Bike around the small island, have lunch at the Willows Inn or the Beach Store Cafe, gather seashells and sea glass along the beach, and head home much more relaxed than you were before!
