Skywatch Friday: In the Morning

Joggers and kayakers were already circling Lake Padden when I arrived to wait for sunrise.

The Wall

A post is the perfect place to perch and watch the kayaks, feed the ducks, or just enjoy the early morning air.

Polar Dip

Hundreds of adventuresome people, including Lizzi, my husband and our daughters, ran into and out of Lake Padden very quickly for the annual Polar Dip.  Once most of chaos was over this brave bunch of hardy ducks took a full dunk into the 42 degree lake to celebrate New Year's Day.

Lake Padden Polar Bear Plunge 2011

A discarded bottle lay serenely on the thin layer of ice covering Lake Padden the morning of January 1, 2011. The calm of the morning, and the ice, was shattered by what came next.

POLAR BEAR PLUNGE!!!

My brother-in-law and I, and a couple hundred other crazy people, discarded our clothes in the 28-degree air and plunged into the ice-covered lake on New Year's Day. An exhilarating way to kick off 2011!

Quack Quack! We're Back!

Back online, that is. After four torturous internet-free days (in which I inexplicably had lots more free time on my hands) the Comcast guy came out and replaced our busted modem. Now I can get back to life as usual-- perusing headlines about celebrities I don't care about, cackling at tacky forwarded e-mails, checking Facebook every five minutes to see if anything's changed... wait a minute. Where did all that free time go?

Lake Padden Cormorant

"Cormorant," according to Wikipedia, is a contraction of "corvus marinus," or "sea raven." Despite its name, this cormorant apparently likes fresh water just fine.

Theme Day: Reflections

Shoot, I always forget about theme days! So now that I've belatedly caught on, here's my second post of the day for the July theme day: Reflections. Has your heart fallen sideways lately? Or perhaps turned green with jealousy? Well, even a sideways heart is still a heart.

Tree Swallow

This pretty little tree swallow had a nest in the rafters of one of the shelters at Lake Padden. The eggs weren't hatched yet, but I took this before our vacation so I'll have to return to see if there are babies now.

Floating Over Lake Padden

Some fisherman left a decoration hanging from a branch over Lake Padden, making an ideal foreground for the fishermen in the boat.
