Skywatch Friday: Farewell

Sony Cybershot DSC-W55
9/5/2007 - 4/18/2010
Rest in Peace

Last Friday I packed up the girls and went to Birch Bay State Park for an evening of camping and playing on the beach. Unfortunately this evening would mark the final day of our trusty (actually not so trusty) Sony Cybershot. A wayward grain of sand jammed up the lens mechanism beyond repair. No amount of disassembly, compressed air or encouragement from by pliers would repair the situation.

Although it's not a particularly stunning sunset, I'm posting the Sony's final photograph in memory of its life and service to us.

And now a question for all of you: We are looking at getting a good extended zoom point and shoot such as the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35. Does anybody have any experience with this camera or something similar? We'd love to hear your thoughts and recommendations.

  1. Sorry to hear about the loss of a good friend that has brought us many excellent shots to enjoy. Wayne's little point and shoot camera just met it's end and he got a little Canon SD 940IS based on the review in MacWorld magazine. It doesn't have all the features you need, but it will be a great little pocket camera for Wayne I'm sure. - Margy

  2. That's about how long my first point-and-shoot digital camera lasted, but I never figured out why it quit. It turned on, focused, but simply stopped actually taking the shots. That's when I got my DSLR, which I've had for about three years now. Unfortunately I can't help you with recent models, but good luck.

  4. My last two cameras have been Sony Cybershots. The first had really slim lines, easy to slip into a pocket, but was no good at distance. The second, the one I use now, does much better on the zoom but strains the pocket seams and has a slightly delayed response time. Good luck with the Panasonic. Let us know how you like it.

  5. I'm looking at getting the Nikon L110 right now myself. I'm not familiar with the Panasonic. It's hard to lose a camera that's served you well.

  6. What a beautiful final photo it is though! I haven't had any experience with the Lumix, but have read great things about it.

  7. After days and days of deliberation we decided to go with a Fujifilm Finepix HS10. We'll have our first photos on the new setup by the end of the week!
